Daniel J Marin’s Communism juxtaposes photographs of two vastly different cities—New York and St. Petersburg, Russia.  The photographic interconnections between the cities happen both visually and rhythmically.  Communism is made up entirely of scans of Marin’s original Polaroids. The show opens with a triptych from Russia and ends similarly with one from New York.  The layout follows the arc of Marin’s travels: a trip to a foreign destination and a return home.  In between are pairings of images that show visual similarities between disparate worlds.  The correspondences in thediptychs appear in various forms including composition, color palette, and subject matter the result is the blurring of the cultural and economic differences between two environments. Marin’s choice to leave all images untitled further enhances the idea of congruity and also the anonymity of each city.  The end result is an exhibit that explores and challenges the complex reality of home.
